BYD introduces Flash Charging to the UK

BYD has brought its new Flash Charging technology to the UK for the first time, and it’s hard to overstate just how big a leap this could be for electric car drivers. Demonstrated at BYD’s UK headquarters in Uxbridge, the system promises charging speeds far beyond anything currently available, delivering up to 1500kW through a single connector when paired with the brand’s latest Blade Battery 2.0.

If you’re still unsure about leasing an EV, this is the kind of technological advance that will go a long way towards easing many peoples’ concerns.

In real-world terms, this particular technological advance means charging your car’s battery from 5% to 70% in just five minutes, or from 10% to 97% - essentially, a full charge - in a mere nine minutes. Even in extreme cold, a 20% to 97% top-up still only takes around 12 minutes. Hence BYD’s not particularly catchy but absolutely to the point slogan accompanying the announcement: “Ready in 5, Full in 9, Cold Add 3”.

The first model capable of accepting Flash Charging will be the upcoming Denza Z9 GT, and the demonstration figures are eye-opening.

Based on its WLTP range of 372 miles, a five-minute charge can add around 223 miles of driving, while a nine-minute session adds roughly 323 miles. That’s the kind of turnaround time that starts to make EV charging feel a lot more like a traditional fuel stop, and it’s a major step towards removing the last big barrier for drivers who regularly cover long distances.

This is potentially our first glimpse of a future where long-distance EV travel becomes almost frictionless. A future where you can say goodbye to planning your journey around 40-minute charging stops or hoping the next rapid charger isn’t already occupied.

What makes Flash Charging even more interesting is the way BYD plans to deploy it.

The chargers don’t place huge new demands on the national grid because they rely on on-site battery storage that slowly replenishes itself throughout the day. That means installations can happen quickly and without the usual infrastructure delays that plague high-power charging projects. BYD expects around 300 units to be in place across Denza stores and other locations by the end of 2026, giving the UK one of the first large-scale rollouts of ultra-high-power EV charging.

If the company delivers on that promise, BYD’s Flash Charging could become one of the most significant upgrades to the UK’s EV landscape, and a clear sign of how quickly new developments in battery and charging technology can be a complete game changer almost overnight.
